Get your (laptop) performance on!

What an amazing experience today! For far too long, I have only seen what DJs have been up to through events or parties but never have I had the opportunity put myself in their shoes and explore the many things they do to bring the music to us - it was absoultely incredible to see James show us step sequencing (check out the pic and video to see what we've been able to play with!) and then to have a go at actually having a jam ourselves.

Taking the title of this blog entry as a hint, there are 2 sites we explored which are great for kids to use at school to create their own step sequencer.

The first one involves designing a circular step sequencer in a fun and mathematical way using polygons.

"Groove Pizza is a circular rhythm app for creative music making and learning! It’s also a playful tool for creating grooves using math concepts like shapes, angles and patterns. Groove Pizza debuted at the Department of Education in April 2016 to the acclaim of The Washington Post, USA Today, Julian Lennon and many others. Over 100,000 Pizzas served in 159 countries to date!

Start working with one of the "specials" pizza presets and add/remove "toppings" to adjust the groove, or click on the "Shapes" tab and drag various shapes onto the big circle to play and explore math-inspired grooves."

To me, it was a very interesting concept using shapes to introduce beats and various ways of counting however, after trying out drumbit, I personally found that easier to use and make beats which I could develop and build upon.

Here's something I've created, having a look at more of the features:

I'll leave you with a little question to think about.... what are your thoughts on disruptive technology?

How do you think doing the learning, for example the easy rote learning things, at home would affect our children's overall learning?

....perhaps students get more opportunities to engage in more apply-based activities but I'd love to see what you all think!
