Mix up/ Mash up

Here's an interesting quote I encountered today about technology and media...

"A war for ideas. The battleground is the internet." - Brett Gaylor

Intrigued? Check it out here! Gaylor discusses some compelling ideas about DJs and the music they produce. We can see that there are many issues out there about authenticity and copyright in today's digital world however at the end of the day we listen and support what DJs do as they mix and mash various musics to create new material - and particularly where we are living in a world where technology is increasingly becoming more prominent, it has opened up an avenue for this genre of music.

Watch this brilliant example of Disney's Pixar movie "UP" by Pogo:

Moving the "DJ idea" into the classroom we can see that composing and creating music allows us to assess students whether they are able to put those elements from performing and analysing music into their composition. How handy does technology become when we can combine composition with these tools to enhance and our students' learning experience!

Check out Madeon's mash up of 39 songs and notice how he utilises tempo changes, modulations and effects to create this new material:

We can do a small scale project like this in the classroom with our kids using simple applications on iPad devices: Check them out below and become a DJ yourself!
