Games! Some say games is all fun and play but have you ever considered the benefits of incorporating gameplay into learning?
With technology becoming such a prominent aspect of children's everyday lifestyle, it's important to see how we can use this powerful tool to invigorate learning. As a child growing up, the gaming platform was definitely not as advanced and diversed in comparison to what technology has to offer nowadays - there would be the occasional Tetris battle and of course, who could forget the much loved Club Penguin. It was stimulating to an extent where it provided a form of entertainment, yet still unlocking strategic thinking within gameplay, however we can see that integrating educational focuses with gameplay has changed the learning of children - whether it be formally or beyond the classroom
Children have access to many platforms of technology where learning becomes an integrated part of gameplay. Check out this drumming game, Taiko No Tatsujin Drum 'n' Fun, which targets left and right hand co-ordination with rhythm. It's a great game to develop rhythmic skills and when levels are increased, these skills can be furthered!
However we also need to address the impacts technology has and how it affects the child's developing brain (cognitive function and emotional/physical wellbeing). Research from the Rasmussen College indicates that 90% of two year-olds have used a computer and 50% of five year-olds use a computer on a regular basis. Too much screen time can increase withdrawal symptoms and loneliness.
As a music educator, using technology to create a positive learning environment can become quite a challenge, however, understanding the importance of balance is key to any child's education.
Check out this comprehensive list of online music games accumulated by Cornerstone Confessions. It is organised into the sections:
